Bullies hold Manipur to ransom. They have conveniently donned the mask of rebels with a cause. They want to liberate Manipur from the slavery of India. And they go by the name of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), United National Liberation Front (UNLF), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL).
The mainstream media analyses their struggles as being ideological and great. NDTV.Com wonders why these terrorists are unwilling to start talks with the Government of India. This is to miss the point. These men wield guns not because they are fighting for any selfless humanitarian cause but for the malicious satisfaction that violence gives them.
Their motives are psychological; being non-integrated emotional failures in real life, they exult in the pain of others. That way they feel powerful. There is no difference between a serial killer and a terrorist. Both will go on killing unless caught and punished. Both do not understand compassion. They respect only violence. The Government of India should not bother with holding talks with rebels. There ought to be a policy of rapid action and unforgiving justice for terrorists everywhere in the country. Manipur terrorists are not different from Sikh, Islamic or Maoist terrorists. They are parts of the problem that stops India’s development.
The Manipuri people desire peace and so their literature and drama are mirroring this desire. The rhetoric of the dramas is pro-peace, pro-life and joy. Manipuri intellectuals see in this great social activism. They see future mass movement starting. But is it possible that the more aggressive terror-mongers get, the ordinary citizen in Manipur as also anywhere else where terrorists rule, escapes more and more into the fantasy of art.
A sense of high art lulls them into the acceptance of violence rather than stoking anti-terrorist sentiments. And perverts never understand these finer artistic escapes. They only understand the gun, the bomb and violent reprisals. On Monday, a bus packed with passengers was blown up near Imphal. The terrorists casually said sorry and that is all about. Now some Manipuri playwright might make a sad drama out of it to sensitize the public. Only thing, terrorists lack conscience and thus no art can ever reach them. They need psychiatric help.
Because all talks and all sympathy have failed and will most probably fail in Manipur, we have the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act still in force there for more than 20 years.
