The real story about racism: why I refuse to study abroad.
Subhasis Chattopadhyay , India: Sep 19 2007

Few days back, a colleague went off to the US on a Fulbright scholarship. I too got tempted to check out my chances for getting one of those coveted foreign scholarships. But this background work has totally put me off. I posed a few questions to those who have returned and never thought of working in a white country again. The first thing everyone reported was a palpable glass ceiling which is there for all Indians abroad. You can go upto this mark in your career but no more. Above this mark is the territory of only a white man. A young lady pulmunologist had such a harrowing experience even before 9/11 in the London tube that she swears that she will never visit London again. A group of punks in Neo-Nazi T-shirts had come within the train compartment with chains and all the while rotating them screamed ‘Paki, Paki’ at her. No white person dared intervene. Another veteran Professor of English who proudly specialised in US Literatures was told rudely in a university seminar in the US to kindly read a paper on any Indian author living there. After all Indians are also Americans, reasoned the organising committee. And as far as I have heard from my recently migrated colleague; he has to sit in the last bench with students whom he is supposed to teach and hear the original white professor lecture. He is only allowed to do the preliminary scoring of answer papers of various tests. I, for one, am happy being in India.

yes, indeed!why go to a foreign land when we can jolly well live as first-class citizens in our own country?.....it shows, the westeners havent progressed a bit... they are still as narrow-minded as they were fifty years ago!
