We are blaming our own government for donating only $1m to cyclone hit Bangladesh. Times of India has pointed out that India could have done so much more for the poor cyclone-Sidr hit Bangladeshis. Also this very popular paper reports India’s eagerness to help out far-off Indonesia during the 2004 tsunami. Apparently, India is just not doing enough for Bangladesh. This is spite of India’s emerging status as a global economic giant.
Let us consider a few facts:
a) India’s foreign minister, Pranab Mukherjee has spoken to his Bangladeshi counterpart, Iftikhar Ahmed Chowdhury about India’s readiness to further help Bangladesh rebuild herself. Bangladesh’s response has only been lukewarm.
b) India is a starving nation in spite of the Sensex’s Bull Run and the glitter of the metros. We are a nation where our own people go without food and shelter. First our own ought to be fed and then aliens’ comforts thought of. This sounds uncharitable. But would anyone feed the neighbour’s kids first when one’s own go hungry?
c) It may be argued for the sake of foreign policy that we must be more liberal in donating to other nations to consolidate our own position in the subcontinent. This is a wrong perception. We can donate huge amounts but we will never be able to please any in the subcontinent. Pakistan and Bangladesh do not share our secular thrust. China is rabidly communist. Nepal and Bhutan are slowly shifting to radical Maoist violence. Burma is in the clutches of a merciless military junta. They think us weak for being liberal and anti-orthodox.
Our country is blessedly free from dogged ideologies. Countries like Bangladesh in the first place separated from us for they think of India as being unfit for co-existence. It is in their interests that we donate to them and then they use these funds to send terrorists against us. The late dreaded Bangla Bhai operated from funds channelled from the Bangladhesi exchequer. Why should India donate to a country which is unstable and the government prone to easy toppling? Like Pakistan, Bangladesh is a rogue nation. Money sent there will fund wicked designs. The poor in such countries are forgotten.
We must contextualise India’s reluctance to help out Bangladesh within these parameters. Without or with our aid, the poor there have no chance of survival. They are just fodder for the rich Mafioso-style conservative leaders. The money is better kept with us for it will have better use.

a) What response were you hoping for? a song and dance, for goodness sake her countrys been ravaged by a cyclone.

c)I can’t see India ever being a superpower if it’s not charitable to it’s neighbours, it’s easier to give $1m and to forget about it than to organise relief aid.

Jonty, what have the victims got to do with terrorism ?? I don’t understand your logic there, would a british doctor refuse aid to an irish civilian because he’s classed as a IRA terrorist.?
Your comment reveals a sad communal bias... I did not talk of Hindus or Muslims in my article...why is this need continuously to divide folks on the basis of there religion? Divide the world into criminals and good folks. There are Hindu criminals and Muslim criminals. One wonder which group should a person who tries to color an unbiased assessment with religious overtones be classed into...I find some venting and subtle efforts to stoke hatred here...
Do you know that irrespective of Rajiv Gandhi assassination and the Tamil Tigers crisis in Lanka and the claim that Indian Tamils are supporting their cause , India has a good going with Lanka . SO u cannot say ALL neighbours are against us.

And WHAT was the original reason for pakistan and bangladesh coming into their own?
Answer: Because the hindus and Muslims could not co-exist.
Like Indian tamils supporting LTTE.. Indian muslims are supporting Al Qaeda and Taliban and all other Islamic terror outfits in India and outside.

Bangladeshi civilians are equally India haters... if you didn’t know... India got them freedom and they protested against the presence of Indian army in Dhaka barely days after that.
Rajiv Gandhi gave a blank cheque to Khaleeda Zia when Cyclone hit Bangladesh in early 1990s. What did the Bangladesh army do in return? They kidnap Indian BSF jawans, gouge out their eyes, chop their genitals, disfigure their faces, kill them and throw their bodies in the forests.
Why should I as a taxpaying citizen of India give any money as aid to such a country.
For your information India supports the maximum number of Bangladeshi refugees in Mumbai, Kolkata, Tripura, Guwahati and other states. They are predominantly muslims and their numbers are estimated at nearly half a million. What do you say?
India became three nations not because the Hindus and the Muslims fought...because of a thing called divide and rule.

Thanks for the feedback. I am well aware of the divide and rule policy of the white men. They have created havoc and turmoil wherever they have set foot. Be it in Africa or Australia or India or Eastern Europe.
I have done extensive reading on this subject, will take your advise and read up your suggested works too.
I believe you should change your stance too. One can’t give aid to people who kick us in the teeth after they are better off.
In my opinion the only solution to the South Asian (Indian subcontinental) crisis is to create a Indian Union on the similar lines of the European Union in which all the SAARC countries should be amalgamated. We should have a common economy, currency and open borders. Then things will be much better.
It is a terror-harbouring derelict country run by despots with diabolical designs against India.
